Posterior Capsule Opacification: A Review of Experimental Studies

چکیده
Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication of cataract surgery. It causes a gradual deterioration visual acuity, which would otherwise improve after successful procedure. Despite recent advances in ophthalmology, this has not been eradicated, and incidence PCO can be as high 10%. This article reviews literature concerning pathomechanism examines biochemical pathways involved its formation methods to prevent complication. We also review reported tests performed cell cultures under laboratory conditions experimental animal models ex vivo human lens capsules. Finally, we describe research involving eyes clinical setting pharmacological that may reduce frequency PCO. Due multifactorial etiology PCO, vitro studies make it possible assess factors contributing complications search for new therapeutic targets. Not all proliferation, migration, contraction are reproducible conditions; moreover, humans animals additionally stimulated by various degrees postoperative reactions depending on course Therefore, further necessary.

Posterior Capsule Opacification: An Overview
DOS Times Vol. 12, No. 4 October, 2006 Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) decentration still remain two major complications of successful extracapsular cataract surgery (ECCE) or phacoemulsification. Ridley, who performed the first intraocular lens implantation in 1949, himself noted these complications in his earliest patients.7 In his initial...

OBJECTIVE To present a new model of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in mice. METHODS An extracapsular lens extraction was performed in 28 consecutive mice. Animals were humanely killed 0 and 24 hours and 3 and 14 days after surgery. Eyes were enucleated and processed for light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS In 20 animals (71%), the eye appeared well healed before death. ...
متن کاملSystems of analysis of posterior capsule opacification.
This paper demonstrates the wide variety of systems for the analysis of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). No single system has been proved to be a gold standard and it is difficult to comment on the advantages of one system over another with the limited current knowledge on the effects of PCO on vision. There are few studies that actually compare the different systems of analysis. Researc...
متن کاملRisk factors for posterior capsule opacification.
I mprovements in techniques, instrumentation, and intraocular lens design appear to have been associated with declining rates of posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery. While morbidity associated with posterior capsule opacification and its treatment, Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, is limited, progressive opacification affects quality of vision and visual function, while capsulot...
متن کاملA systematic overview of the incidence of posterior capsule opacification.
OBJECTIVE Reported rates of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) vary widely and are based on various definitions of PCO, varying lengths and intervals of follow-up, and the use of different surgical techniques, intraocular lens (i.o.l.) designs, and methods of IOL implantation. This study was designed to obtain a more precise overall estimate of the incidence of PCO and to explore factors tha...
